The Contrôle Technique (CT) was introduced in 1992 and the rules have
been steadily tightened ever since. Important changes are to be
introduced to the Contrôle Technique (CT) on January 1, 2008. Although the European Union does not control the CT there is a process of harmonisation under way to bring the 27 countries closer together over time. In the meantime, France retains the four-year rule, unlike Britain where it is two years. The Contrôle Technique When? Every two years as soon as the vehicle is four years old. Where? In one of the registered centres of which there are 5,200. Why? For the right to use the public highway and to sell a vehicle privately, in which case the certificate must be dated less than six months before the sale. How long does it take? Half an hour How much does it cost? Between 50 and 60 euros with a revisit, if required, costing between 15 and 20 euros The changes being introduced in 2008 concern: Shock absorbers The biggest change is the requirement that they are not legal if they have “oil leaks forming droplets” and oil on the body of the shock absorber. Seat belts No longer allowed are burn marks on the belt, sticking points in the unrolling of the belt, worn stitching and weakened fixings to the body of the vehicle. Rally style harnesses are no longer allowed. Airbags The container of the bag must not be damaged after it has been used. Pollution Testing of the onboard pollution monitor in modern vehicles – for petrol vehicles sold after January 1, 2002 and for diesels on dates depending on the date of purchase after January 1, 2004. Brake fluids Insufficient fluid level will be a reason for failure. Brake pedal The absence of rubber or anti-slip material will be a reason for failure. Bumpers (pares buffles) Checks for vehicles sold after May 25, 2007 Lights Tightening of the rules on the state of headlamps and side lights |

On February 26, 2008
results from the Institute Pasteur were positive for a dog suspected of
rabies. The dog had bitten a child, and was euthanised and the head
sent for examination the next day.
