The Association Brouillon Culturel (ABC) is a multi-cultural group based in Montguyon (17), Charente Maritime and in existence since 2002. Members meet for social events, visits, and restaurant meals (of course). However, ABC's main purpose is to further knowledge of the French language among new arrivals; it currently sponsors two courses on Wednesday afternoons and one on Fridays, all at different levels, plus a French grammar course. More recently, ABC has started teaching English to French-speakers. 70% of teachers on strike – maires resist child minding scheme.
The teachers are on strike in protest at the plan to “sedentarise” 3,000 of France’s 11,000 itinerant special needs teachers who operate Réseau d'Aide Spécialisée aux Élèves en Difficulté (RASED). Instead of moving from child to child, they will be based where there is a concentration of children with problems. Their pay will remain the same.
