The legal aspects of acquiring a property in
France can be a challenge to many people,
especially if their French language skills are not up
to scratch. Help is at hand, however, thanks to the
French notaires who have set up a very informative
English-language section on their website,
notaires.fr. There is a wide range of information,
laid out in a very simple style, which is easy to
navigate and provides a wealth of tips and advice.
The site is split into four main sections: family, home, estate and business, with detailed
information beneath these. In the My Home section, for example, you can find out more about
the costs of purchasing a property, the pre-sale documents you will need to use, and the legal
obligations related to any sale. There is also a link to the notaires’ official house-pricing
calculator on www.immoprix.com, which can give you a guide to house prices in any area of
France, based on real sales recorded over the last year, and shows the evolution of house prices
in your town or village over the last decade. As well as property issues, there is also a family
section, giving information on marriage, inheritance and adoption, again simply laid out and
easy to understand. The My Estate menu decribes how best to organise and transfer an estate,
while My Business helps with the legal complexities of setting up businesses as well as
commercial and agricultural leases. Even if you have to go to a notaire eventually to sort out
your transaction or legal problem, it can prove to be a great help if you have been able to read
up a bit of background beforehand.
