‘Mendelssohn Piano Trios’, Trio Magellan, Trio No 1 in D minor Op 49, Trio No 2 in C minor Op 66.

When Mendelssohn finished his first trio
for piano, violin and cello in D minor in
1839 never did the 30-year-old composer
(1809-1847) imagine the work would come to
dominate the chamber music repertoire. The
trio was followed six years later with a second,
in the more tragic C minor. Mendelssohn’s
melodic powers were at their highest of his
short creative life.
Explora Concept’s latest release is by the
young French ensemble, the Trio Magellan,
all three top prize-winners and former
students from the Paris Conservatoire. The
recording breathes fresh life into music that
makes a difficult transition from the
classicism of Haydn and early Beethoven to
the heady romanticism of late Brahms. Yes,
there are several versions of both trios
available on the market: the London-based
Nash Ensemble and the French Trio Wanderer
are just two leading examples. But the Trio
Magellan – Pierre Fouchenneret, violin,
Antoine Pierlot, cello, and Julien Gernay,
piano – abounds in lyricism, tone and
technical dexterity. The recording is
sensitively controlled by Théo Croix. This is
real music-making and an essential new
recording for all chamber music lovers.
