Would you like to boost your income, or use your savings for something interesting? Starting your own property empire could be the answer. There really are bargains to be had in France for renovation or to let as a gîte and you may not even need a mortgage

It’s a good idea to seek advice from professionals who can help you plan the development and ensure that all administrative aspects are covered. French planning laws are quite different to those in Britain and many other countries, so make sure your grand designs are likely to gain approval before you start digging the foundations.
We’ve selected five properties in different locations. In case you don’t fancy renovation, we’ve also included a ready-to-use holiday home in Poitou-Charentes.

LIMOUSIN €45,382
Exciting renovation project, with woodland and garden
This old house with attached barn has not been lived in for some time, as you can tell from the plant growing up the front wall! There are three rooms downstairs that could easily make a large open living/dining room with open fireplace and a separate kitchen. Upstairs you have enough space to make two or three bedrooms as well as a bathroom. There is about 1000m2 of garden as well as a separate piece of woodland - ideal for those open fires.

Minutes from the UNESCO world heritage site of Vézelay, this cottage could make a splendid two-bedroom holiday home with gardens. Recent work includes an entrance, ground-floor living room of 24m2 with beamed ceiling, sink unit with two-ring electric hob, window to the front elevation and a partly finished shower room. There’s a large attic space that could be easily converted.

Located in a village with corner shop, hairdresser, schools, restaurant/pub and bakery, it is 2km from a fishing lake, 8km from a swimming and fishing lake and one hour from the nearest airport.

POITOU-CHARENTES €46,000
Ready-to-move-in holiday home with two bedrooms
Situated on a holiday resort this property has 40m2 of living space, with a living room, kitchen, bathroom and two bedrooms. Although the cottage is essentially a holiday home, you could use it as a permanent residence or you could let it out.
