Romanesque churches along the banks of the Charente.

Birthplace of former president François
Mitterrand, Jarnac houses his bequest and a
museum dedicated to architecture and public
works, including the Louvre and the Institut du
Monde Arabe. The country around Jarnac has some
magnificent examples of Romanesque art. Some of
the most impressive are the (11th century)
Benedictine abbey of Saint-Étienne-de-Bassac, on
the banks of the Charente the ruins of the
Augustine Notre-Dame-de-Châtres near Julienne,
the churches of Bourg-Charente, Nercillac,
Sigogne, Houlette, Mérignac and Jarnac itself (the
church and crypt).

For more background into the written and oral
history behind each of these monuments, consult
the guide book ‘Les clefs de nos églises’.
Châteaux, ancient family seats, manor-houses
and ramparts contribute to the prestige of this
hospitable region.
