Dear Editor, The time it takes to acquire French nationality seems to involve many factors aside from the suitability of the applicant. It also takes into account the political climate of the département concerned, (which I suspect may be the case for ours in the south). Sometimes it may even be something as trivial as which side of bed the local bureaucrat has got out of that morning! And I do like and respect France. My application took a little more than two years, but that was not too bad considering that they threw a wobbly at almost the last minute and refused to accept my peculiar-looking British consulate certifcate recording my birth in Asia, which was in English but which they insisted must be replaced by the original language version. A dear, law-abiding Chinese Philipino friend of mine, married for many years to a British national and resident in France for at least 12 years, having made great efforts to learn French and mix with the locals, is still waiting, five years on. Name and address withheld If other readers have had long waits for French nationality to be granted we’d like to hear from you. Meanwhile, we will be publishing a rough guide to getting French nationality in next month’s issue. |
