Each a talented guitarist and composer in his own right, Mark Newman and Michel Griffin, two British musicians living in the Lot valley, have decided to join forces, playing concerts as a duo and opening a folk-club in Cahors.
The folk-club will open once a month in Cahors until September, starting on April 23. Floor singers are welcome, and there will be free wine and pizza for any musical offerings.

Michel Griffin was playing at the Espace Culturel de Leclerc in Cahors last July when he first met Mark. He invited him to come along and play at the Latitude, in Latoulzanie, in August. There they played as a duo for the first time, jamming with such ease that few in the audience believed they had never played together before. Such a good time was had by all that the two musicians decided to team up. Since they were both busy at the time – Mark touring in the UK and Michel giving a series of concerts locally – it was only in 2008 that they got together again.
Mark Newman played extensively in folk clubs in the UK and taught acoustic guitar: one of his early pupils was Terry Lees, recently voted Acoustic Player of the Year in ‘Guitarist’ magazine. Mark’s recollections of his time in Leicester include opening for the Rev. Gary Davis and Ramblin’ Jack Elliott at the college. Mark has been described as “a major influence on folk and blues music in Leicester… part of the folk heritage in the city and as a teacher and guitarist who laid the foundations of the city’s current roots music scene” (‘Leicester Mercury’).
Michel Griffin also had a successsful solo career in the UK, playing mostly in London and around his native Oxford, and regularly on BBC radio, before moving to the Lot seven years ago. His songs are by turns poetic and humorous.
Both men have produced two solo albums since they moved to France, which are available locally at the Espace Culturel de Leclerc and online via www.oldbridgemusic.com (Mark) and www.michelgriffin.com, where you can also watch the pair live via a link to videos of them on YouTube.    LS

Folk Club open the fourth Wednesday each month, April to September, at the Carré d’Art Art gallery at 46 rue Pélegry (just off the Place de la Libération), Cahors. Doors open at 8pm on Wednesday April 23.
