In the Périgord region, business activity
is often based on small long-standing
family enterprises. This applies
particularly to the wine trade in Bergerac
where vineyards bearing the same family
names can often be found going back
several centuries. So, you might say that
the vine-covered slopes between
Monbazillac and Pécharmant represent
one long family saga. It’s certainly the
case with the Tiregand estate where de la
Panouse family originally settled in 1826.
The family story unfolds with four
succeeding generations until the property
finally came into the hands of Madame
de Saint-Exupéry, daughter of Cécile
de la Panouse.
Today, the beautiful Tiregand estate
is being developed and modernized by
their children, especially François-Xavier.
If you go there, you’re bound to come
across him in the winery or striding
between the rows of vines on the slopes
beside Creysse. Through him you’ll
understand just how much strength
of character and justifiable family pride
is needed to renovate and modernize
a vineyard.
François-Xavier will also explain to
you just how attached he is to Tiregand
on account of its ancient family roots
and his admiration for the work
accomplished by past generations.
His aim is to transform Tiregand into
a great Pécharmant wine recognized
as such by connoisseurs, and to be able
to pass on to future generations this
passion for excellence, combining
tradition with latest techniques, loyalty
and family solidarity.
The wine’s reputation is well known
and has been selected for its quality
by a number of restaurants in the
area who have added it to their wine list.
Indeed, Château de Tiregand is one of the
top wines in the Pécharmant appellation.
Go out and visit the vineyard.
François-Xavier will explain the qualities
which make Tiregand a great wine: the
richness of the sandy-gravel terroir, the
subtle mix of grape varieties (Merlot,
Malbec, Cabernet franc and Sauvignon),
respect for the vine using reasoned
canopy management, low yield and so on.
And perhaps you might catch yourself
dreaming of a vineyard yourself?

Château de Tiregand,
Pécharmant 2006
Another very fine result for this
superb wine with its brilliant, deep
purple robe.
On the nose, its finesse is delicately
expressed with aromas of vanilla, followed
by plum and prune. It finishes on a note
of blond tobacco with a touch of musk.
On the palate, its substance develops
astonishing density, amplitude and
structure showing tight-knit, ripe, oaky
tannins. A great wine for cellaring.
