On Thursday, May 8, five
winegrowers will offer a
day of discovery and fun
walking through the newly
opened organic vineyard
route of Saussignac. On the
way, these passionate
winemakers will explore the
themes of organic and
biodynamic farming and
biodiversity. A picnic stop is
planned in the garden of
Château Le Payral at Razacde-
Saussignac. At the end of
the walk, guests can taste the wines from
the vineyards they have visited. The day
starts at 10am in Saussignac and finishes
around 5pm. For English-speakers, a
translation at each of the stops will
be provided.
Approximately half of the
winegrowing members of the Saussignac
Producers' Union are either organic or in
conversion to becoming organic. This sets
a stark contrast to the national average
for France of around 3% of wine growers.
According to Thierry Daulhiac,
winegrower and president of the
Saussignac appellation: “I am proud to
represent an appellation where organic
agriculture has so many followers. This
organic wine route is an occasion for
people to discover nature and the riches
of Saussignac, her people, landscape,
architecture and wines.”
The dynamic team at the Saussignac
Tourist Office, with the help of the Conseil
Général of the Dordogne, has developed a
selection of walking routes which total
55km across four communes of the AOC
Saussignac. These walking routes offer
breathtaking views over the Dordogne
valley and a varied landscape of vines,
woods and meadows, with an array of
noteworthy castles, towers and fortresses.
The guides will lead groups every Tuesday
morning in the tourist season but the
walking routes are open to the public
at all times. A guide to the routes can
be bought from the tourist office or
from the winemakers on the route
