Hello Editor,
I am writing about our recent journey from Chambolive in Limousin to Caen for our ferry to England.
Just after leaving Chambolive, we stopped so my husband Harry could fill the van up with petrol, then we were on our way again. All of a sudden, the van started to shudder. Harry realised he had put petrol into our diesel van. We pulled off the motorway and started to look for a garage in the middle of Limoges, not an easy task.
Two minutes later, we found a garage but the owner didn’t speak English and we didn’t speak French. Luckily, the garage owner’s friend was in having his own van repaired, and as he spoke some English, he helped interpret.
We phoned AA Euro Assistance who liaised with the garage owner, who then agreed to drain the engine, replace the filter and put new diesel in.
At noon, the time he normally closed, the garage owner was draining the engine, his friend went to purchase a new filter and fresh diesel for us and his children were drawing smiley faces to calm me down.
The job finished, Harry and the garage owner went on a test drive to make sure the van was OK. It was and he was satisfied we would make it home. He even phoned the AA and gave us a reference number just in case.
When we asked how much it would cost for all their time and trouble, both the garage owner and his wife were adamant: “No charge”.
I then asked his wife for directions back to A20. She got in her car with both the girls and drove for 20 minutes escorting us back to the motorway.
There are no words or payment to repay such kindness. Thanks once again to the garage owner, his wife, two daughters and friend.
Merci,
Harry & Christine Johnson

For readers’ information, this kindly garage is Garage Massias, at 9 rue Théodore Bac, Limoges.
Obviously one shouldn’t expect free service like this every time. – Ed
