WORD OF THE MONTH: Clé (clef) Print E-mail
Friday, 18 July 2008
Both spellings are allowed, except in clef de voûte (keystone, or, figuratively, cornerstone/ linchpin). The ‘f” is silent.
L’été venue, j’ai bien envie de prendre la clé des champs (get away, ‘fly the coop’), d’autant plus que je viens de mettre la clé sous la porte (have just shut up shop). Mais la fuite en avant (refusal to come to terms with things) est-elle vraiment la clé du bonheur (the secret of true happiness) ? On m’a proposé un poste-clé (a key post) avec un beau salaire à la clé (with a fat salary thrown in). Certes, je pourrai de ce fait me payer la voiture, voire (or even) la maison de mes rêves, clés en main (car: ready to drive away, house: with immediate possession), après avoir remboursé mes dettes bien sûr, car dans le cas contraire ils me mettront sous clef (otherwise they’ll lock me up), puisqu’il y en a plus d’un (quite a few people) – y compris mon ex-associé – qui se ferait un malin plaisir (take a perverse pleasure) d’être cité à comparaître comme témoin clé (called to appear as a key witness) à mon procès (at my trial)!
