My wife and I visit France
regularly and are faithful
readers of ‘French News’.
Has anyone ever commented
upon the title of the latest
James Bond film, ‘Casino
Royale’? A masculin noun
with a feminine adjective?
Perhaps Mr. Fleming’s
French wasn't up to the job?
Amicalement, Michael Hafferty, Sunderla Dear Michael, Well spotted! It had never occurred to me. Rather than Fleming’s command of French (or lack thereof!), I suspect it’s more to do with the phonetics, forcing the reader to (mentally) pronounce Royal in the French manner (with the stress on the last syllable rather than on the initial syllable as we would pronounce it in English), thereby giving the title the desired whiff of exoticism! Kind regards Richard |
