The Royal Society for the
Protection of Birds is
Europe’s largest conservation
charity. Their site reflects their
passionate belief that we all have
a responsibility to protect birds
and the environment.
Climate change, expansion
of urban areas and transport
infrastructure, agricultural
intensification and overexploitation
of our seas all pose major threats to birds, and the RSPB campaigns effectively to
protect our feathered friends.
The site is designed to help people get to know birds better, with an enormous database of
all the birds likely to be found in the UK, which also covers almost all the species found in
France. Information about birds’ behaviour and appearance and downloadable audio files of
their song are on the site, and surfers can even purchase bird call ring tones.
The interactive bird identifier enables even the most untrained birdwatcher to know what
they are looking at, and the nest and feeder webcams are an entertaining way of learning more
about birds’ habits and manners. The A to Z of a wildlife garden shows many ways to attract
wildlife to the garden and create garden habitats for different species. Whether you are just
mildly interested in birds, or a fully-fledged ornithological boffin, this site has a lot to offer.
