Who is Moriarty ?
We have all heard of Professor James Moriarty, arch enemy of Sherlock Holmes. The fictional super-villain is described by Holmes as ‘The Napoleon of Crime’. You may know Michael Moriarty, the American-Canadian award winning actor and prominent jazz musician. If you’re old enough you may remember Grytpype Thynne’s sidekick in ‘The Goon Show’. And in New Mexico there is the town of Moriarty (pop. 1765).
Now, there is a new addition to the Moriarty club: five talented musicians who have enjoyed phenomenal musical success in France this year with their first album ‘Gee whizz but this is a lonesome town’. Their first single ‘Jimmy’ was a huge top 10 hit earlier in the year.

So, who are Moriarty?
Rosemary Standley, the singer, takes up the story...
“Moriarty is the name of a clan from the west of Ireland. In Gaelic, Moriarty means ‘Man who comes from the sea’ or ‘navigator’. We navigate. We travel a lot. We are all children of immigrants – Swiss, Vietnamese and American. We were born in France, but France is a temporary home, just a few roots. France is a good place to be passing through.”
Where is home?
“I don’t know. You get this strange sensation of being in a place that you call home, but is it really home? You go somewhere else that feels more like home than home. Home for us is Moriarty. You might have noticed, but on stage, we always bring our furniture with us, so that we feel at home.”
How do you classify your music? The French music press has labelled it Franco- American neo-folk.
“We just play it; it’s up to the fans to classify it. It is in fact unclassifiable – can you say that?”

And how would you classify the album?
“The whole album is a collection of lost letters and postcards that never found their destination. It’s a bit like us, we were all lost, but we found our destination in Moriarty.”
Moriarty will be ‘at home’ all over France until the end of the year. At the moment the band is doing the rounds of the summer festivals, but it embarks on a national tour in September. They will be transporting their furniture all over France and setting up in a town near you. Do not miss this unique musical experience.
