More than 40 of Europe’s leading oil companies, in 29 countries across Europe, are supporting the Save More than Fuel campaign (www.savemorethanfuel.eu), launched by the European Petroleum Industry Association in conjunction with the European Commission. They will be distributing leaflets at garage forecourts on fuel efficiency and responsible environmental driving methods.
Regarding the state of the car they recommend:
• a well-serviced car runs more economically, so check fluid levels and tyre pressures regularly1 .
• remove unnecessary weight from the car.
• remove unused roof racks2 .
The campaign encourages using our cars less, car-sharing, and choosing a fuel-efficient car, and publishes a series of ‘Smarter driving tips’:
• drive smoothly, anticipating traffic flow
• minimise braking and acceleration
• change up gears as soon as possible when accelerating
• don’t sit with the engine idling – turn it off
• keep your speed down
• close windows at higher speeds2 BW
1 Under-inflated tyres: increase your fuel consumption by up to 4%
2 Reduced wind resistance: reduces 10%
... and air conditioning: increases 5%
