‘Democracy? Not yet, perhaps never’ by Joe Hanania auto-edition (27 ave Beauséjour, 87330 Nouic) 2008. 206p. Price 20 euros In contrast to most books’ dédicaces, for Joe Hanania his gruelling tour is just a beginning. The purpose is not so much to sell the book as to involve people in its next publication. This edition is just the first step in what Mr Hanania, nearing 80, hopes will be an international movement towards bringing about true and workable democracy. It is to be hoped that his longevity matches his passion. The book describes and analyses not only American democratic ideals and realities but refers back to the ancient Greek model and goes into some depth on European and other versions. As much questioning as documenting, it poses forceful questions: ‘What is democracy?’, “Which of our self-styled democracies can justly take the title?” and “Is it possible to have a real democracy in our society?” The book is published in English and in French, and the author hopes to establish contact with people who will help with further translations – first into Spanish and later, if all goes well, into other languages. A busy weekend with "La Forêt des Livres" at Chanceaux-pres-Loches in Indre et Loire with the talks on the "Renaissance et Nouvelle Renaissance" on Saturday and the 150 writers signing books on the Sunday. There seems to always be something of interest going on throughout this country. 27.08.2008 I was lucky at Angles s/l'Anglin book fair in that France 3 in Poitou-Charente did a short news clip showing the book cover and me answering the question "What is democracy". I have placed 10 copies at the bookshop in Tulle "Le Plaisir des Livres with a dedicace set for the 1st week of October. ... I have just written an article concerning the "new" issue (1 July) of "Marianne et les valeurs de l'Europe", one of which shows a hand putting a vote in the ballot box with only the words "democratie" and France. The article is being currently being translated into French ( by my translater in Mézières) and will be sent to the magazine "Marianne". It is a strong "anti-Sarkozy" article. The issue honours the "Présidence Francaise de l'Union Européene". The democracy stamp is valid the end of 2008. If all goes well today, I plan to be in Perigueux tomorrow afternoon. 26.08.2008 The book, both English and French, has been placed in the following: Limoges : Page et Plume Librairie, Place de la Motte Bellac : Librairie Presse, rue de Thiers Le Blanc : Both major Libraries Mézières-en-Brenne : Presse Loto, rue du Pont Civray : Maison de la Presse, Place de Maréchal LeClerc L'Isle-Jourdain : Maison de la Presse Isloise, Place d'Armes Brantôme : Librairie Lanard, rue Gambetta Saint-Junien : Librairie Goursaud, Place Deffuas Dedicaces : 13 Sept at Isle Jourdan et 20 Sept at Limoges, and in Le Blanc (date in September, not yet fixed) It is hoped to place it in one major bookshop in the following major cities before the end of October: Poitiers, Périgueux, Tulle, Châteauroux, Guéret and Angoulême. 5 copies were sold at a 1-day book fair in the village of Montrol Senard, and 16 were sold at the 4-day fair in Angles s/ l'Anglin and 15 copies sold at two dédicaces in Nouic and Civray. Tony Benn read the book in July "with great interest" and commented "It is scholarly, readable, relevant, and timely" but adds that he is "coming to the conclusion that Democracy is a genuine revolutionary process rather than an institution and nobody in power wants to share power so we have to keep the pressure up." This Democracy book is a limited auto edition in French and English. Because of my age (79) I am slowly placing it in about a dozen Librairies within a 100km radius of my home in the following Departments: Haute Vienne, Vienne, Indre, Charente, Corrèze, Creuse and Dordogne. It will also appear in an occasional book fair or "dédicaces" within these departments.
