School zoning map changes - don't delay! Print E-mail
Tuesday, 12 June 2007
The new Minister of Education, Xavier Darcos, is not wasting any time in applying Nicolas Sarkozy’s plans to change the much disliked (and much disobeyed) system by which children must attend schools according to where they live.
Starting this academic year parents of secondary school pupils attending collèges and lycées may apply to send their children to out of area schools but they must apply by JUNE 30. The new scheme is limited to the number of places available in the schools concerned.
Where places are limited vacancies will be allocated taccording to the following priorities in descending order:

Handicapped children

Children benefiting from a scholarship – boursier au mérite

Children receiving social assistance

Children needing particular medical attention in the neighbourhood of the school requested

Children needing to follow a special curriculum

Brothers or sisters of children already attending the school

Children living on the edge of an adjoining area and near the school requested

The procedure
Families must submit a dossier before June 30, 2007 at the offices of the local Inspection académique of their département. The addresses are available in the telephone book or on internet on: http://www.education.gouv.fr first by region and then by département.

Decisions will be announced at the latest by July 20.

In the event of a dispute with the education authority concerned, you can take your case to the médiateur de l'Éducation nationale.
