Bouygues has announced it is entering the ADSL market with a modem package called Bbox. It will give subscribers access to broadband internet, telephone over the internet and television.
The market, dominated by Orange and SFR, is complicated as shown by the troubles experienced by Darty. A year after launching its Darty box, it has only managed to grab 1% of the French market, despite a major advertising campaign including TV prime-time weather forecast slots.
Bouygues, which will initially only target its existing mobile phone customers, said its own, simple and rugged software will give it an edge over established players who often have unhappy customers.
Orange, which has the largest share, also has the most problems, with some regions of the creaking France Telecom machine (the Dordogne and Haute Vienne particularly) not being able to cope with the new technology after years of staff cuts.
