Big drop in road deaths Print E-mail
Wednesday, 08 October 2008
108 fewer people were killed on French roads in September compared with the same month last year.
The minister commented “these results are further proof that all road users have the potential to save lives by driving responsibly within the law”. Despite this some experts have pointed out that the main cause for the dramatic fall this year is the rise in the cost of fuel that has caused motorists to drive fewer kilometres and therefore to be less exposed to the risk of accident. Since the beginning of the year the overall annual decrease in road deaths is 11.6% (6,460 compared with 7,309).

The Minister for the Ecology Jean-Louis Borloo has announced a 25.2% drop in deaths resulting from traffic accidents for the month of September 2008 compared with 2007. The number of injured admitted to hospital fell by 22.2%, which is 758 fewer people than a year ago.
