Draft law for net shopping Print E-mail
Thursday, 13 November 2008
An estimated 150 million Europeans shop online but only one in five does so crossborder. Apart from the usual problems of language, many consumers are more concerned about non-delivery and how to deal with problems after sale.
The Commission has proposed new legislation to make cross-border shopping easier. Among the measures suggested are a common 14- day cooling-off period and a ban on contract clauses which allow suppliers to send something other than what was ordered. Conditions of sale will have to be shown clearly on websites.
The commission is concerned at the large price differences for some items between member states and hopes that common online shopping rules will help level them out. The issue is seen as important because the turnover is already €128 billion in 2008 and is expected to grow 230% over the next five years.
