The maire of Périgueux Xavier Darcos, has been named
Minister of Education in newly-elected Nicolas Sarkozy’s
government headed by François Fillon. Despite the double
mandate, a spokesperson for the mairie said: “He will
definitely be keeping his post as maire of Périgueux.”
In Bordeaux, maire Alain Juppé is now Minister of the
Environment and Sustainable Development and ministre
d’état. He announced quickly after his nomination that he
would not abandon his post as maire of Bordeaux, saying that
the local and national functions combine well. His deputé
Hugues Martin asssured residents that the municipal team will
be able to manage general affairs again.
Other maire’s to have gained a ministerial post in
the new government are Eric Woerth, maire of Chantilly
(Oise), now Minister of the Budget and Public Spending, and
Hervé Morin in Epaignes (Eure), as Minister of Defence.
