Members of the help-the-homeless brigade
(BAPSA) were puzzled when they had
to move a homeless lady, Denise, from her
pitch in the 15th Paris arrondissement.
Nothing they could say inspired any
enthusiasm for a nice comfy bed in a hostel.
Denise wanted to stay where she had been for
10 years in the rue Linois, near the Gare
Montparnasse, between a restaurant and a
building being renovated to rid it of asbestos.
They finally managed to drag her off to a
municipal centre for the homeless much
against her will. Once safely installed in the
CHAPSA (Centre d’hebergement et
d’assistance aux personnes sans abri) in
Nanterre, she expressed great concern about
the many rubbish bags and dustbin liners she
had left behind. They turned out to contain a
total of €68,493.80 in notes and coins. Local
people confirmed that the 66-year-old had
always expressed contempt for any charitable
offerings less than one euro coins and notes.
The local authority is considering placing the
money in trust its owner.
